Narrow Aisle (VNA) pallet racking is a type of pallet racking system that is designed to optimize warehouse space utilization. It is typically used in facilities with high-density storage requirements, where space is at a premium. The system is characterized by aisles that are narrower than those found in traditional pallet racking systems, typically between 1.6 and 2 meters wide, hence the name.
The narrow aisles are made possible by the use of specialized lift trucks, such as turret trucks or swing reach trucks, which are designed to operate in confined spaces. These trucks have the ability to lift and place pallets into very tight spaces, allowing for maximum use of the available vertical space in the warehouse.
The pallet racking itself is constructed to be very tall, with multiple levels of storage accessible by the specialized lift trucks. The system can be configured in a variety of ways, including single or double reach, depending on the specific needs of the warehouse operation.
Similar to standard or wide aisle racking systems, the main components used to create the structure include the frame, columns and beams. In addition, the forklift needs to be guided, which can be in the form of mechanical or wired guidance. Mechanical guidance is a track that runs along the exterior of the structure and serves as a barrier between the truck and the structure. The slender ram is equipped with additional flip-up wheels that run along the track without the truck itself making contact with the track. Wired guidance consists of a slender electromagnetic cable that runs centered along the aisle floor and connects to a truck sensor to guide it.
In a narrow aisle pallet racking system, specialized forklifts are used to operate in the narrow aisles and maximize the use of space. There are two main types of forklifts that are commonly used in narrow aisle pallet racking systems:
These forklifts have a rotating mast that allows the operator to pick and place pallets in either direction, eliminating the need to turn the forklift around in the narrow aisle. Turret trucks are ideal for very narrow aisles and can operate at great heights.
These forklifts have a reach mechanism that can extend into the pallet racking to pick and place pallets from deeper positions. The swing reach mechanism allows the operator to place pallets in a variety of positions and is ideal for warehouses with varying pallet sizes.
When choosing a forklift for a narrow aisle pallet racking system, it is important to consider factors such as aisle width, ceiling height, pallet size and weight, and operator comfort and safety. It is recommended to consult with a forklift expert or manufacturer to determine the best forklift for your specific warehouse requirements.
